Why should I exercise?
Getting at least 30 minutes of moderate activity most
days of the week can help you live healthier, add years
to your life (and life to your years). It will also
strengthen your body and mind, prevent and manage
disease and help you to look and feel your best.
(For more details see: benefits of exercise).
How much should I exercise?
Almost everybody can benefit from getting at least 30 minutes of exercise working hard enough to break a sweat most days of the week.
If you have a chronic disease or other health conditions you should check with your doctor to see if it is o.k. for you to exercise and to see if there are any limits to what you can do.
Children should be more active than adults and, if you want to lose weight and/or reduce your need for some medications you will need to exercise longer and/or at higher intensities and change your eating habits.
For more details check out the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Physical Activity Guidelines.
What exercise should I do?
You should combine cardio exercises (aerobics, running, brisk walking, bicycling, etc.) and strength (lifting weights, resistance tubes or bands, body weight, etc.) exercises and work at a level that feels challenging but not painful. Be sure to include stretching to improve flexibility and range of movement.
Doing activities you enjoy will increase your success and quality of life! Play games, join sports leagues, hike, take long walks with people you like spending time with, participate in different exercise classes etc. If you don’t enjoy your exercise program it will be harder to develop the habit of getting exercise most days and our goal is to have physical activity to become a habit of your lifestyle.
What do I wear? What gear to I need?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move and shoes that are comfortable yet provide support. Other than that all you need is the motivation to get moving. Nothing fancy or expensive is required. Use your imagination and get moving you’ll be glad you did!
What else should I know?
Be safe, use good posture, don't hold your breath, enjoy yourself and get moving! You’ll look and feel better and have fewer trips to the clinic. You can enjoy good health and be fit – but only YOU can do it!
